Olives respond well to pruning and look especially good when grown as standards, usually in pots, with a long clear stem and bushy top. Olive trees are excellent specimens in a sunny Mediterranean-style garden or as standards in a large pot used to frame a doorway or on a terrace.
Olive leaves are pointed, grey-green in colour and are retained by the plant all year round. Olives are slow-growing and their flowing period in hot summers is June to August when tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers are followed by edible green fruits
Non-standard grown olive trees will take on a distinctive gnarled shape as they mature and provide an excellent focal point in a sunny sheltered area. Eventually they may reach a height of 5m with a 5m spread.
Although frost hardy, Olive trees will need winter protection on cold areas. In milder winters they can be left outside in a sheltered spot, otherwise they should be over wintered under glass.

Olive Care: To protect against wind damage use a low angled stake driven into the ground on the windward side at a 45° angle. Olives will need to be watered during dry period and the plant area should be kept free from weeds. Two or three times a year, during the growing period, the olive plant will respond well to a top-dressing of nitrogen-rich general fertiliser.
